Before I really dived into painting I put my creative energy into photography. I always loved portrait shots, the power of the lens to capture a face, a smile, a laugh, a frown, preserved forever in time.
As humans we are drawn to faces more than anything else. We see them even when they aren’t there, in clouds and clocks, electric sockets and even on toast. Faces help us to make sense of the world. We feel the emotion of the face we are looking at; we respond to it at an instinctual level.
But I always wanted to say more with a portrait than I could with a photograph. By painting a portrait, I can draw on that emotion. I can tell a story in strange other worldly colours. I can blur edges and distort shapes, I can create splatter and drips and the chaotic mess of paint that turns, in the end into something beautiful and unique.
I hope that you’ll find these faces interesting, beautiful and strange.

Stretch Canvas: Shipped on the original wooden stretcher frame, ready for you to have decorative framing added if you wish.
